So, the excitement of building a smart home took over me, and without a second thought, I went out on a shopping spree. I spent my hard-earned money on smart devices that I always wanted, but unknowingly, I made my smart home journey a lot more difficult than it actually is. 

For instance, buying so many smart devices without realizing their need was the first of many mistakes I made in my smart home journey. 

Anyway, it took some time to undo all my mistakes and below, I’m going to discuss some vital factors so you may truly build a smart home without unwanted hassles:

Factors to Consider a Smart Home:

Identify Your Needs:

I believe that people have different expectations of a smart home. Some people may want more security, so they opt for home security cameras, smart doorbells, or automated locks. However, some people may prefer the convenience and choose voice smart assistant devices s or smart speakers.

That said, some people may want to buy every smart gadget they get their hands on, without assessing their needs first. This is what I did and below, I’ll tell you why I believe it’s a wrong approach.

It’s because my experience tells me that if you buy several smart home devices simultaneously, then you may have a hard time navigating them around. Plus, there’s always a chance of breaking the bank if you impulsively buy multiple smart home gadgets at a timeonce.

So, the sane choice is to first identify which smart gadgets you need the most, and then gradually bring in more devices.

Consider a Smart Home Ecosystem:

A major mistake I made while building a smart home was overlooking the smart home ecosystem. Frankly speaking, I had no clue about a smart home ecosystem and how vital it was for a seamless smart home experience.

Essentially, a smart home ecosystemit is a network of interconnected smart gadgets that work simultaneously. Plus, such connected smart gadgets in an ecosystem may be controlled via a centralized hub through voice.

Well, I successfully installed a few smart devices that were easier to install like a smart speaker or smart plugs. However, as I had no technical expertise in installing a smart camera or a smart door lock, I eventually ended up calling for professional help.

The point is, that not every smart home gadget is easy to install as some devices require professional help for complex installation. While you may install smart devices with easier setups, always get professional help when you lack the technical expertise.

Otherwise, you may not install a device the right way and there’s always a possibility that it would malfunction or create problems in the future.

Although some smart devices like motion sensors may work offline too, their functionality may be limited. To fully explore a smart gadget’s features, you may need an active internet connection.

That said, I made a major mistake of adding more and more smart home devices over the same network, on top of using the same connection for entertainment, work, and gaming. Consequently, the bandwidth kept on thinning which made my devices inefficient.
